The XFL’s Energetic Return

Many football fans may still remember the XFL. The experimental football league was originally a partnership between the WWE and CBS in 2001 that unfortunately ended after its first season. However, many sports leaders, and Vince McMahon, in particular, saw the promise that the XFL could provide.

During the XFL’s first run, Vince McMahon believed that the XFL could continue in an expanded form. Thanks to his vision, the XFL is officially back on TV as a football league designed from the ground up for the 21st century.

XFL games will be easily accessible, broadcasting live on major networks like FOX, ABC, FOX Sports (1 and 2), and ESPN.

Fans can also expect a uniquely fast-paced approach to football built into the XFL’s design. Major differences in gameplay include:

  • New and more impactful game kickoff rules
  • No gunners during punting, alongside other punting rule differences
  • Scrimmage play replacing the extra point kick
  • A new double forward pass rule
  • Five-round shootouts in overtime similar to those seen in soccer and ice hockey
  • Nearly continuous play clock, alongside other play clock changes

The XFL will also implement several officiating rule changes and feature updated designs to the game ball.

Football fans will find impressively high-octane, non-stop action through the XFL. Fans will enjoy 4 games per week, with all 8 teams currently scheduled to play one game per week during the 10-week regular season. The regular season will flow directly into an action-packed playoff round, while the pinnacle championship game is scheduled for Sunday, April 26.
